Gollum Paint Guide

Here it is, the Paint Guide to Gollum

gollumfinal1.jpg

**I would Like to make clear that this model is based on the Gollum from the Two Towers Movie Gollum, if you don't think his skin is a "Human" color then I suggest you watch the movie again or get your eyes checked, infact I find that if the Movies had to choose a GW color to fit gollums skin it would definetly be Dwarf Flesh!!!**

Firsly I suggest that you be atleast experienced with painting hobbits.  This model doesn't look very hard, but his sheer size is a great factor, and the amount of flesh showing requires it looking well, or else the Gollum model will fail in its impression.  Please don't attempt this model using my guide if this is one of your first times paiting.

Lets move on, heres a list of what materials you will need!  All of these are purchasable at your local Games Workshop Store!!!
  • Paints: Dwarf Flesh, Codex Grey, Scorched Brown, Bestial Brown, Skull White, Bleached Bone, Dark Angels Green, Ghostly Grey, Pallid Flesh, Chaos Black, Fortress Grey, Golden Yellow, Lightning Blue (You don't need the exact paints, read the guide an determine what you'll need if you dont have alot of them, I suggest you have atleast all the fleshy colors that are listed above!)
  • Nail Clippers and Nail Filer (I have those GW hobby stuff, but these two household items are the best I find for cleaning your models!!!)
  • Detail Brush, Fine Detail Brush (I wouldn't suggest anything else than these, you could make with just one, but a better result will require both brushes!!!)
  • Super Glue

Now lets get to the guide.  For each step there should be a picture (some might not, but dont worry those without are easy steps).  **Do not attempt to paint gollum if you dont not know what Highlighting is!**.  If you don't understand something I mention please email me or post something on the LoTR GW Forum!!!  Lets tackle this spectacular sculptured mode!!!

  1. Remove Gollum from the blister pack.  Clean him and the rock he sits on up (that is cut any pieces from the mold off, and file them down if they are noticable still after being cut).  With this complete make sure he fits in the base... If he doesn't addust the models sprue or the base so that he fits in.
  2. With step one complete Glue Gollum into his base.  After the glue drys Base him with Chaos Black.  If your using the brush and Chaos black for this step then make sure its watered down.  If you spray paint it with Chaos Black then make sure any metal still showing is covered with watered down Chaos Black!
  3. **For more experienced painters start painting Gollum himself, if your not so confident in painting scroll down and follow the guide to painting the Rock Gollum is on then scroll back up once that is complete!**  Once the black is dry and no metal showing we can begin.  Base Gollums flesh in Dwarf Flesh leaving his eyes, mouth, loincloth, and rock still black.  If done properly this step should take around an hour.  This is because Dwarf Flesh is the base color of Gollum's flesh, and will be showing alot in the final model, I did about 3 coats to make sure NO BLACK can be seen threw the Dwarf Flesh.
  4. With the Dwarf Flesh dry we can move on to our first highlight which is with Bleached Bone.  Highlight all the Dwarf Flesh with bleached bone.  If done properly this step should take atleast 30 Minutes and we start to see that gollum coming through.  With this step finished you should be inspired by how hes looking and determined to move on!!!
  5. With the Bleached Bone highlight done we move onto highlighting the Bleached Bone with Pallid Flesh, not as throughly as step 4 though.  I suggest on Gollums spine have it Bleached bone, then going up it put little Pallid Flesh dots on it, to make it look like its "Spiny".  Aswell with the Fingers and Feet, on the Knuckles put a Pallid flesh dot, this helps the look alot, and makes him look "Boney".
  6. With Step 5 complete were done Gollums Flesh.  If you haven't een doing the face just use the Same technique as the flesh that is Base Dwarf Flesh, Highlight Bleached Bone,  Highlight Pallid Flesh.  The face should look very well and articulated if this is down correctly.
  7. With everything done up to step 6 make sure you can still see quite a bit of Dwarf Flesh, for this is Gollums main flesh color as mentioned before.  In other words the Highlights shouldn't be heavy, leaving little Dwarf Flesh visible, they should be light.

Face

  1. All thats left for the face is the eyes and mouth if you've painted the face already.  If you haven't go back and follow to step 6 working on the face.
  2. With the eyes we want to base them in Skull White.
  3. With the Skull White dry we will now use Lightning Blue, and with alittle on the brush put a dot to be his pupal in the skull white on both eyes.  If you mess up and both dots are in different places, to big, bloched over the eye, etc then base the eye in skull white again and redo Step 3 until it looks right.  If your not condifent with such detail then I suggest using a toothpick to make the dots, although these can cause alot more damage and frustration is you mess up!!!
  4. If you want detail then on the bottom left of the blue of the eye lightly brush some Skull White and on the oposite (top right) put a really really small Skull white Dot, to create light reflection!!!  Looks Superb!!!
  5. All to do in the mouth is the teeth (and the tongue if u want).  Base the teeth with bleache bone.
  6. Highlight the teeth with Skull White
  7. I had a tongue but I didn't like it so I went over it with black, if you want one then in the bottom center of the mouth base with red gore, highlight with Blood Red.

Loin Cloth

  1. With the Loincloth Base it with Scorched Brown.
  2. Highlight it with Bestial Brown
  3. Highlight it with 50% watered down Bestial Brown or Vomit Brown (**Vomit brown is significantly lighter though!!!**)

Rock

  1. Base the Rock that Gollum is on with Codex Grey.  With my model I left a thin line of Black seperating Gollum from the rock, to ensure that I don't mess up and to add to effect and seperate the model.
  2. If you still have anoying little black spots throw the grey then take some watered down Codex grey and paint over the rock, that'll get rid of those cocky black spots!!!
  3. Highlight the rock with Fortress Grey!!!
  4. Highlight the rock with ghostly grey.

Finishing Touchs

  1. For the Hair I based it with Chaos Black.  Don't put a huge mop on his head like it looks like GW did with their Gollum, that looks lame and unreal for Gollum... our preciousss...
  2. I painted only about 7-10 strands of hair, most of it being on the back of his head.  Also make sure it doesn't go all the way to the top of his head, in the movie his hair starts from more of the sides of his heads, only a few sprout from the top!!!
  3. Drybrush the hair Carefully with Codex Grey.
  4. For the scars on Gollums back I based them with Fortress Grey, then highlighted them with ghostly and then skull white.
  5. For the moss on the rock base it with Dark Angels Green.
  6. Highlight the Moss with Golden Yellow, and then Highlight that VERY lightly with Skull White.
  7. With the base painted it Bestial Brown and then varnished it!

There ya have it, your Gollum model is complete, in my opinion is more accurate to the movie than GW, and definetly a contender if not a winner to anyones bestly painted models!!!
